About

My primary research interest is in the area of rape and sexual assault. I have written extensively about male rape and sexual assault, policing and rape, social attitudes to rape and rape sentencing. I recently completed a project with Rachel Fenton at Bristol Law School concerning the training offered by the Judicial College in England and Wales to judges who hear rape cases. In the future, I plan on writing about academic freedom and the social pressures on scholars that can lead to self-censorship.

I have also written about the effectiveness (or otherwise) of interrogational torture as a counter terrorism measure and am currently completing a book on the debate over the legalisation of interrogational torture.

I regularly give talks to the police, judiciary, forensic medical examiners, voluntary sector groups and NGOs  concerning male sexual victimisation, the impact of social attitudes on rape law enforcement and false rape allegations. I have also provided advice to government departments on these topics.

Outside of work, I am a passionate fan of boxing and regularly train at Bristol Boxing Gym
