About
My main interests are in historical formations of urban modernity, everyday life, and constructions of urban subjectivity. By default, I seem to be becoming a bit of a Londonist - which I'm secretly quite enjoying. My book 'The Spiv and the Architect: Unruly Life in Postwar London' (which came out with Minnesota UP in May 2010) was all about post-war reconstruction and its complex interaction with emerging forms of queer male subjectivity. I'm now working on a project with the working title of 'Automatic London'. This explores attempts in the 1920s and '30s to bureaucratise movement and develop a form of proto-cybernetic urban engagement within ordinary Londoners. It also revolves around my three current obsessions: the Tube Map, the 'A to Z' street atlas, and the London 'Monopoly' board.
